What's a Mellophone?

As mellophone players, we are often given blank stares when we try to explain to people what a mellophone is. So, perhaps this will make it easier:

Mellophone
This is a mellophone, also referred to as the horn. A mellophone is a marching version of the French Horn. It is an alto voice, often given countermelodies, or doubled with the Trombones to bring out a particular melody. Still confused? Just think of it as an oversized trumpet that makes a lower sound. There, now you know what a mellophone is!

More Information About R-Row

Over the years, nearly every row in the band has come up with a mascot or two to represent themselves. R-Row has two of these such mascosts (and a few unofficial mascots as well!):

Pink Panther
PINK PANTHER

The Pink Panther has been the official mascot of R-Row since the early 1980's. He was appointed into this position because of his slyness, and because he is the epitome of cool.

RoadRunner
ROADRUNNER

In the fall of 2003, the members of R-Row decided that it was time to unveil another mascot. This was not to replace the Pink Panther, but to assist him. Thus the RoadRunner was born. The ACME RoadRunner was a smart, speedy creature, and his name begins with R, another big bonus. However, the most important thing about the RoadRunner is that he consistently made Wiley Coyote look like a fool, and it just so happens that E-Row, our sister row of mellophones, has Wiley has their mascot. RoadRunner was simply another way to claim our supremacy over E-Row, as seen to the right:
